The South Pittsburgh RFC is proud to be affiliated with a high school rugby club
known as the Pittsburgh Fat Heads. The club is composed of high school students
who have come together from various South Hills High Schools including Bethel Park,
Keystone Oaks, Mt. Lebanon, Seton-LaSalle and Thomas Jefferson, Brentwood, Carrick
and South Fayette.
The Fat Heads, sponsored by the famous South Side eatery of the same name,
Fat Head's Saloon,
was founded in 2007 and participates in a league of tri-state high school teams
which currently includes teams from Fox Chapel, Woodland Hills, Barbarians (a combined
West Hills area team that plays their home games at Sto-Rox High), Mon River (a
combined Morgantown, W.V. club) and Burrell.
The high school rugby season takes place in the Spring and the Fat Head’s play their
home games at the South Park Fairgrounds and practice in the Dormont area. We begin
practicing in mid to late January so we can get all new players up to speed on the
basics of the game as well as the conditioning required to play the world’s greatest
sport. Our coaches are experienced players as well as being certified by USA Rugby
for coaching at this age grade.
If you are between the ages of 15-18 and want to find out if you have what it takes
to play rugby for the Fat Heads please contact Joe Och,
Dr. Mike La Piana
or Brian Cox for more information.
